This conference, run by Australia’s International Quality and Productivity Centre (IQPC), will take place in Sydney, Australia, between the 2 – 4 November 2010. It will bring together Government, state and area health authorities, workforce planning directors, and directors of nursing in order to address the issues associated with health workforce planning for a sustainable future.

'The current pressures on the Australian healthcare system demand some radical surgery. About nine per cent of Australians are already working in the health sector. This is the fastest growing employment sector, and it is predicted that by 2025 some 20 per cent of the workforce will need to be engaged in health-related jobs if we are to deliver the present level of services, let alone innovations. This increased demand for health workers – driven by an ageing population, many of whom have chronic diseases – will place significant pressures on a workforce already under stress’ – Peter Brooks, Australian Health Workforce Institute (AHWI) 2010.

Challenges facing the sector

Major stakeholders and decision makers from the Australian healthcare industry will be brought together, as well as key representatives from state and local authorities to discuss the best strategies for addressing the challenges of:

  • redesigning workforce plans and job roles
  • getting the most from the current workforce
  • new and innovative ways of recruiting staff to the health workforce
  • retaining staff to build a sustainable workforce.

At the event workforce planners will learn from other organisations on how to overcome these challenges in order to build a sustainable workforce that will meet future demands.

The conference will be attended by both national and international contributors, including the CfWI’s research lead, Martyn Dell, who will offer a presentation covering:

  • the changing landscape in England
  • the contribution of the CfWI
  • latest developments in workforce redesign and substitution.
