Our thought leadership paper, 'Making the most of allied health professionals', not only provided an assessment of current workforce issues but also potential opportunities for improvement to help support commissioners of services and education, including local education and training boards (LETBs), to plan for future workforce needs of these specialist groups. Further work was undertaken looking at the speech and language therapy workforce.

Pharmacy

The CfWI was commissioned by the Department of Health (DH) to forecast and analyse the future supply and demand for the pharmacist workforce in England between 2012 and 2040. Our strategic review published in September 2013 is supporting workforce planners at the DH, Health Education England and wider government to make robust decisions about the number of pre-registration trainees required to secure the pharmacist workforce of the future.

A rapidly increasing ageing population and a growth in community-based services will mean nurses will be required in the future. They will need skills in complex case management, advanced specialist practice knowledge in care delivery, as well as the confidence to work independently in community, rather than acute hospital, settings. The Department of Health commissioned the CfWI to undertake a review of the workforce delivering adult psychological therapies for the NHS in England in order to form a clearer understanding of the current workforce delivering psychological therapies, and to develop proposals for improving future workforce information.
