The CfWI was commissioned by the Department of Health (DH) and Health Education England (HEE) to contribute qualitative and quantitative research and analysis to support HEE and NHS England in providing sufficient sonographers to deliver diagnostic services. The wider diagnostic service needs of commissioners and service providers of sonography will also be taken into account.

Our project aimed to:

  • identify the extent of sonography workforce shortages and assess impact on service delivery
  • identify ways of reducing workforce shortages and provide suggestions for workforce planning required to broadly balance the supply of sonographers in the medium to long term (20 years ahead).

In June 2015, the CfWI launched a survey to gather evidence to support Health Education England (HEE) and NHS England with workforce planning for ultrasound services and  to collect a baseline set of data for the ultrasound workforce. The survey closed on August 7, 2015.

The review  involved desk research, an ultrasound workforce survey, semi-structured interviews, site visits and horizon scanning. For future updates on this work please visit the Department of Health page Workforce planning for health, public health and social care
