On 15 October 2015, the Home Secretary wrote to the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) requesting that the Committee re-reviews the evidence regarding whether nurses should be placed on the Shortage Occupation List (SOL). The Home Secretary has agreed that nurses should be temporarily placed on the SOL pending the results of this review. The MAC is required to report back to the Home Office by 15 February 2016.
Following this decision, the CfWI was commissioned by the Department of Health to produce a report on its behalf considering the evidence for nursing professions to be included on the SOL in the longer term.
The CfWI worked closely with stakeholders across health and social care to gather evidence to help inform this review and highlight the potential risks to the NHS and the social care sectors if the international recruitment of nurses is not made available in the longer term via the inclusion of nursing professions on the SOL.
