Understanding the wider public health workforce in England
Commissioned by Public Health England (PHE), Health Health Education (HEE) and the Department of Health (DH), this review of the wider public health workforce in England identifies the size and scope of this workforce, provides examples of its work and considers possible professional development needs for strengthening this important service.
The report has found that at least 15 million people contribute to the public health agenda in England - ranging from police and fire personnel, to opticians and housing officers.
Other key messages from the report include:
- The wider workforce is interwoven into the fabric of local communities and can be found across the public, private and third sectors.
- The wider workforce is an instrumental part of the new public health landscape.
- Policy makers are challenged to engage with this diversity, provide support and guidance where it will be most effective, and maximise the benefits available.
We have published an infographic to accompany the report that highlights how the wider public health workforce is distributed, which can be found here: www.cfwi.org.uk/widerphinfographic.
