General psychiatry - MAC inclusion report September 2009

There is evidenced room for growth for consultants in general psychiatry over the next five years, according to WRT analysis. Workload is increasing, with an anticipated increase in demand from the Mental Health Act 2007, improving access to psychological therapies (IAPT), national institute for clinical excellence (NICE) guidelines for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia and depression. In the short-medium term, the use of overseas recruitment is a sensible mechanism for alleviating shortages within the profession.
