General psychiatry MAC report March 2009

WRT analysis indicates that there is evidenced room for growth in general psychiatry medical posts that are not training posts over the next five years. Workload is increasing, with an anticipated increase in demand from the Mental Health Act 2007, improving access to psychological therapies (IAPT), national institute for clinical excellence (NICE) guidelines for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia and depression. This report finds that in the short-medium term the use of overseas recruitment is a sensible mechanism for alleviating shortages within the profession.
