In the medium-long term, responsibility needs to be taken for training more medics in genetic pathology. It is currently decommissioned as a training specialty in the UK. As an important growth area, commissioning must be reinstated at SHA level to allow domestic training of staff in the medium to long term. However, in the short to medium term, overseas recruitment is a sensible strategy for alleviating staffing shortages for consultants in genetic pathology. Suitably qualified medics are trained in Australia and New Zealand.
