Medical staff posts MAC report March 2009

It is not easy to fill posts with the current service structure of the medical staff workforce, as there is a lack of available doctors. Re-structuring service is a long-term route to alleviating these shortages but will not alleviate the short-term problem of meeting Working Time Directive (WTD) compliance. Overseas recruitment is a viable way to fill mid-grade service posts and will alleviate shortages, especially through the shortage route facilitating recruitment. These shortages must be viewed as short term, affecting only those specialties still needing to meet WTD and reviewed regularly in respect of the shortage list.
