WRT analysis indicates that there is evidenced room for growth in the medical microbiology and virology workforce over the next five years. Workload is increasing, with an anticipated increase in demand from a number of workstreams. However, modelling indicates there will be limited expansion in the future supply of trained specialists, due to a low number of training posts. In the medium to long term, SHAs and deaneries should plan an expansion in training posts. However, in the short to medium term, overseas recruitment is a sensible mitigating strategy for shortage in the workforce.
