Nuclear medicine - MAC inclusion report September 2009

The current number of trainees in the specialty of nuclear medicine will not meet the estimated requirements of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) for service provision. If no new training posts are created, one approach would be by the use of appropriately trained radiologists. However, clinical radiology is only now beginning to come out of its own shortage and encouraging more radiologists into the nuclear medicine service may well be detrimental to the diagnostics service. Under these circumstances, the short-term use of overseas recruitment to alleviate shortages in the profession is a sensible option.
