Without a change in training and recruitment, WRT forecasts that the number of trained specialists in paediatric surgery will continue to be significantly below recommended levels for many years. WRT agrees that paediatric surgeon numbers need to increase. In the short to medium term, non-EEA recruitment is a sensible strategy for alleviating staffing shortages. This will enable the service to be sufficiently resourced and training capacity expanded while UK trainee numbers increase to accommodate for the increasing demand for their specialty
