Paediatric surgery MAC report March 2009

Without a change in training and recruitment WRT forecasts that the number of consultants in paediatric surgery will continue to be considerably lower than estimated requirements by the Royal College of Surgeons (of England). WRT agrees that paediatric surgeon numbers need to increase. There may need to be investigation into skill mixes and to increase consultant numbers with overseas applicants to allow for the increase in training capacity. This report concludes that recruitment from outside the EEA would be sensible to address the shortage in the paediatric surgery workforce.
