There is evidenced room for growth in psychiatry of learning disabilities medical posts that are not training posts over the next five years. Workload is increasing, with an anticipated increase in demand from a number of workstreams. However, modelling indicates there will be only a limited expansion in the future supply of trained specialists. Independent training sector placements may be an option to increase training capacity in the future. In the short-medium term the use of overseas recruitment is a sensible mechanism for alleviating shortages within the profession.
