There is evidenced room for growth in psychotherapy medical posts that are not training posts over the next five years. Workload is increasing, with an anticipated increase in demand from National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and for schizophrenia. The improving access to psychological therapies (IAPT) programme will impact in both a service and training delivery capacity. WRT modelling indicates there will be only a limited expansion in the future supply of trained specialists in the short term. In the short-medium term the use of overseas recruitment is a sensible mechanism for alleviating shortages within the profession.
