Currently there are only a limited number of vascular scientists and there is an evidenced room for growth in the profession. However, a key constraint to workforce expansion a lack of structured training and limited training capacity. In the longer term, this will be addressed by developing structured training routes. In the short term SHAs and employers can promote workforce expansion by providing funding for in-service trainees where there is training capacity. However, this will not eliminate shortages and overseas recruitment offers a viable short-term mechanism to alleviate shortages within the profession.
